In 2018, the Emergency Military Unit passed the certification process of the Cave Search and Rescue (CAVESAR) module of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) to become a European unit capable of assisting in search and rescue in caves.

The certification process took place during the participation of the UME cave search and rescue team in the international exercise EURiwaterex18, in Madrid.

The ESP CAVESAR team is designed for technical search and rescue operations in caves in all conditions (no diving.) The main tasks that must be achieved by the team during a mission are:

• Command, control and transmissions.

• Coordination (liaison officer).

• Set-up of a base for search and rescue operations in caves.

• Internal communications.

• Medical treatment.

• Technical evaluation.

• Logistical support.

• Ability to work 24/7.
