The only Spaniard awarded so far with the title of "Citizen of Honor of the United States".
Approaching the third centenary of the birth of King Carlos III, the 270th of Bernardo de Galvez and 240th of the American Revolution, Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain will inaugurate on December 3rd at the Casa de America in Madrid, the exhibit "Bernardo de Galvez and the presence of Spain in Mexico and the United States", thus putting a brilliant ending to the various events held this year on both sides of the Atlantic, in honor of the famous General and governor of Malaga that on behalf of the Crown of Spain was instrumental in the independence of the United States.
The exhibit, organized by the Spanish Army Institute of Military History and Culture, will be open until March 12, 2016 and will also be itinerant, being afterwards displayed in various locations in Spain and the United States particularly related to this leading figure.
Through this initiative, the Army wants to join the effort in promoting the knowledge of this illustrious personality, who in December last year was posthumously named Honorary Citizen of the United States by President Obama.
Combining both scientific rigor and amenity, the exhibition will include a selection of valuable items from various civil and military archives and museums such as pictures, documents, maps, weapons, uniforms replicas, miniatures, etc., allowing visitors of all ages to get a closer picture of Bernardo de Galvez and his era, as well as the indelible mark left by Spain in Mexico and the United States.
The exhibit will also include a large oil painting dedicated to General Bernardo de Galvez, shown in public for the first time, under the title "For Spain and King: Galvez in America". This work illustrates a scene from the Battle of Pensacola and has been specifically created on this occasion by the renowned Barcelonese painter Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau.
