Spanish Defense Minister Pedro Morenes and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Ignacio Ybanez, attended the ministerial meeting of the Global Coalition against Daesh petite group, which was held in Washington between July 20th and 21st. For the first time, the ministerial meeting brought together both foreign and defense ministers, giving continuity to the ministerials in Rome and Brussels.

Minister Pedro Morenes ratified the commitment of the Spanish armed forces against Daesh, focused on the contingent deployed in the Iraqi base at Besmayah, whose capabilities will be enhanced once the new Spanish government is formed.

Spain is a committed global Daesh Coalition member, which is currently formed by sixty-three countries, and is included in the petite group of twenty members that are more actively involved. Military wise, Spain contributes with the deployment in Iraq of three hundred military personnel that train Iraqi army units. To date, about five thousand Iraqi armed forces troops have received instruction from the Spanish mission.

Spain also brings extensive experience in the fight against terrorism financing and money laundering in general. In the fight against recruitment of foreign terrorists, Spain has stood cosponsoring Resolution  2178 of the Security Council of the United Nations, and actively participates in the Global Forum Against Terrorism.

Spain also collaborates with the Coalition in the field of communications, coordinating their messages with the other members to counter Daesh messages that incite violence and spread ideas against peace.
