The Defense Minister highlights the links between the United States and Spain in the 21st Bilateral Forum Meeting.

The Acting Defense Minister, Mr. Pedro Morenes, highlighted the excellent relations between Spain and United States, saying that the upcoming official visit of US President Barak Obama, reaffirms the strong political, social and economic ties between the two countries.

“We have  established ourselves as partners in several multilateral schemes and dialogue,  and proof of this are the important exchange visits made”, Morenes said during his speech at the opening session of the XXI Forum Spain-United States which  was held in Santiago de Compostela (Spain) on June 17th -18th .

The King and Queen of Spain traveled to the United States in 2015, and soon, from July 9-11, Obama will visit Spain as President of the United States, first visit of a US President in 15 years.

On the other hand, Morenes emphasized the permanent strengthening of cooperation in defense and security systems of both countries.  “The US Government knows that Spain is committed to peace and stability in the world” he said.

In this regard, he stressed that during his period as Minister, he has signed two protocols amendments to the bilateral cooperation agreement for the defense that greatly extends their mutual assistance.  He also stressed the numerous specific cooperation agreements signed between the two armed forces.

The Minister also said that “Spain is still committed by the transatlantic dialogue,” adding that “Spaniards are strong supporters of the European project, but our European Union has in the United States a key and irreplaceable partner.”
