In a ceremony presided by Vice Admiral Francisco J. Gonzalez-Huix and with the participation of crewmembers of the Christopher Columbus (F-105) and USS Mitscher (DDG-57) frigates, a tribute was paid on June 27 to the Spanish sailors and marine infantryman who remain buried in the old cemetery at Norfolk hospital.
Identified as First Seaman Jose Charlin Bouza, Marine Soldier Jaime Doltre Folgueres, and Seaman Jose Garcia Lopez, these seamen were members of a squadron commanded by Admiral Pascual Cervera, who fought in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in 1898.
Highlighting a historical coincidence, the last sailor mentioned was part of the cruiser Colon's crew, which at the time was the Spanish fleet's most modern, as it is now the frigate Cristobal Colon, which happens to be paying the tribute.
