On Tuesday May 17, Adm. Chief of Staff of the Spanish NAvy Admiral Jaime Muñoz-Delgado Diaz del Rio, imposed the Grand Cross of Naval Merit, White Distinction to US Navy Vice Admiral David C. Johnson, currently military US Navy deputy Secretary for Research, Development and Acquisitions. The award recognizes the leadership of Vice Admiral Johnson during his tenure as Program Executive Officer for Submarines (PEO SUB), and his fundamental and successful execution as technical liaison, necessary for the renewal of the Spanish submarine S-80 program.

The event was held at the Gaylord National hotel facilities, taking advantage of Adm. Muñoz-Delgado's presence  at the 2016 Sea Air and Space  symposium, and was attended by US naval authorities, as well as Adm. Johnson's relatives and collaborators, headed by Mr. Sean J Stackley Undersecretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisitions. On the Spanish side, Admiral Luis Cayetano y Garrido, Defense Adviser to the Permanent Observer Mission of Spain to the Organization of American States and Adviser for Hemispheric Security Affairs, Brigadier General Angel Valcarcel Rodriguez, Defense Attache in Washington, and Naval Attaché Captain Jose Maria Martinez Núñez, as well as a representation of Spanish Navy's officers.
