Largest NATO exercise since the end of the so-called "Cold War".
Trident Juncture 2015 (TRJE15) is part of the concept of Connected Forces Initiative (CFI) Alliance and aims to train and certify NATO's Reaction Force (NRF), which for the first time will count with VJTF, Very High Readiness Joint Task Force, all to test the readiness and interoperability of allied capabilities for collective defense and crisis management.
This exercise has been programmed by the Allied Command Transformation (ACT) headquartered in Virginia, and will be led by Allied Joint Force Command, based in Brunssum, Netherlands.
The exercise consists of two phases: the first, called CPX, will take place between October 3 and 16, and will be a command post exercise aimed at evaluating the command structure of the NRF 2016; the second phase will be the actual excercise, called LIVEX, and will take place between October 24 and November 6, with multiple land, sea, air and amphibious operations, including parachuting in a urban environment and intervention of special forces.
Thirty-six thousand participants from more than thirty allied and guest nations will be involved in Trident Juncture 2015, which will take place in sixteen different scenarios, half of which are in Spain. The remaining eight are located in Portugal and Italy, as well as for the LIVEX phase, will take place in Canada, Norway, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Similarly, other excercises will take place in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
