GENERAL MEADE WAS BORN IN CADIZ.
The cultural Center of Cadiz called Ateneo, payed tribute to General George Gordon Meade, hero of the Battle of Gettysburg, on the Bicentennial of his birth.
The Honors included the unveiling of a plaque at the General's birthplace, Plaza de España, 4. The event was headed by Ignacio Moreno, President of the Ateneo, and joining him were the Mayor of Cadiz Teofila Martinez; Admiral Santiago González Gómez of the Spanish Navy; the Military Attaché to the US Embassy Emily Thomas, and the Commander of Naval Activities at Rota Naval Station, Captain Greg Pekar. During the unveiling, Ateneo Secretary Antonio Ares, read a letter sent by the Meade Foundation of Philadelphia that expressed its appreciation for the tribute being held to General Meade.
Following the unveiling they visited the site to the Council of Cadiz and the church of El Rosario, where the honoree was baptized. The tribute ended with lunch at the cultural institution called Casino Gaditano.
