The event’s honor guest was Congressman Jeff Miller, Florida Representative and promoter of the recent appointment of General Galvez as honorary citizen of the United States, in recognition of the support that in the name of Spain and the then governor of Western Louisiana, provided to the war of Independence and the American Revolution.

Milestones of this support include blocking access to the city of New Orleans and the Mississippi River to British troops; attacks on British garrisons of Manchac, Baton Rouge and Natchez; and the significant Battle of Pensacola in 1781, in which General Galvez regained control of the city until then under British rule.
This portrait of Galvez,
similar to the one that by initiative of the Bernardo Galvez Association is exhibited since last December at the Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate Meeting Hall, was painted by local artist Nina Fritz.
Also present at the event were Mr. Francisco Tardio, from the Miami Spanish Cultural Center; Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward; Dr. Judy Bense, President of the University of West Florida; Ms. Maria Davis, Honorary Vice Consul of Spain in Florida, and Spanish Navy First Lt. Juan Fontan, who at the time was ending a naval helicopter pilot course at Whiting Field School.
