William J. Perry Award CESEDEN

The William J. Perry Center awarded the prize that carries his name to Spain´s Superior Center for National Defense Studies, CESEDEN, (Spain’s Center for Advanced Studies in National Defense) for its excellence in Security and Defense Education, demonstrated over 50 years as a educational military center

The William J. Perry Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies in the United States awarded the prize that carries his name to Spain´s Superior Center for National Defense Studies, CESEDEN, (Spain’s Center for Advanced Studies in National Defense) for its excellence in Security and Defense Education, demonstrated over 50 years as a educational military center that offers high level national defense courses, develops research enterprises, promotes and disseminates the culture of security and defense. 

The William J. Perry Award is named after the Secretary of Defense that on the occasion of the Second Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas in 1996, created on the following year the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies with a mission to develop civilian specialists in military affairs through courses and graduate programs in defense planning and administration, executive leadership and civilian-military relations between security and defense agencies of the democracies within the American continent.

Along with the CESEDEN, the only non-American institution that has received such high recognition, were also awarded the Inter-American Defense College (IADC) and in the individual category, Dr. Richard L. Millett. The award was accepted by its director, Lieutenant General Alfonso de la Rosa from the director of the Hemispheric Center Mr. Mark Wilkins at a ceremony attended by high civil and military authorities from several countries.

In a busy schedule organized by the Office of the Spanish Defense Attaché; LtGen. de la Rosa paid a visit on the same day to the Ambassador of Spain in the United States, Ramón Gil-Casares, and handed him the recently edited book on the occasion of the CESEDEN´s 50th anniversary, he also held different meetings with the director of the National Defense University (NDU) Ambassador Wanda L. Nesbitt, the director of the IADC, Rear Admiral Martha Herb and the director of the National War College (NWC) Brigadier General Guy T. Cosentino.

After a general reception given by the NDU, the day ended with a dinner offered by the Ambassador at his residence that served to further strengthen the ties that Spain maintains with the United States and the Latin American community in matters of security and defense.
