"Juan Sebastian de Elcano" training ship docks in New York

The ship´s music band gave a concert in Times Square.

05/16/14.- After a fourteen-day crossing from Santo Domingo, the training ship

Juan Sebastian de Elcano¨ sailed up the Hudson River and stopped for the thirty-first time in the city of New York, the most visited foreign port during her training cruises.

The ship arrived in New York City in order to support Spain´s candidacy as non-permanent member to the United Nations´ Security Council during the 2015-2016 period, and was part of an intense program of activities during her stay.

The midshipmen had the opportunity to officially visit the seat of the United Nations and the monument honoring the 9/11 victims in Ground Zero. They also made a professional visit to the U. S. submarine base in New London.

Both the Ambassador of Spain in Washington and the Permanent Representative, Ambassador of Spain to the United Nations were received on board the Elcano, as well as other diplomat and military representatives from Spain and other countries, representatives of their Governments in the U.S. To the official reception held on Tuesday, May 13, attended 35 Permanent Representatives to the United Nations, an important landmark on this particular ship stopover.

The ship was docked in central Manhattan and open to visits by the general public and various New York City schools, making the ship´s stop all the more noticeable in the city, along with the concert given by the ship´s music band in the popular Times Square.

The ship is currently crossing the Atlantic Ocean on her way to Europe, where she is expected to visit Dublin, Hamburg and Oslo before reaching Marin on July 13, final stage of the LXXXV Training Cruise.
